Google Vids and the Rise of the Synthetic Middle Manager

Jul 18, 2026 4 min read

Google wants you to believe that the ultimate bottleneck in your corporate workflow is your physical face. With the introduction of personalized AI avatars in Google Vids, the company is betting that instead of recording a quick screencast or writing an email, you would prefer to deploy a digital puppet of yourself to lecture your colleagues. Powered by their Gemini Omni model, this feature allows users to generate and edit video presentations using text prompts and reference images.

It is a classic engineering solution to a human problem that does not exist. The theory is simple: video is engaging, but making video is hard. By removing the friction of setup, lighting, and actual human speech, Google believes it can democratize internal video production. They are wrong.

"Google Vids now lets you star in your own AI videos... alongside Gemini Omni-powered tools for generating and editing videos."

This misses the entire point of why we communicate in the workplace. We do not watch updates from our colleagues because we crave animated pixels; we watch them to gauge authentic intent, priority, and human connection. Replacing yourself with a synthetic replica does not save time. It merely signals to your team that you could not be bothered to talk to them.

The Uncanny Valley of the Quarterly Review

Let us look past the technical achievement for a moment and consider the actual product. Your digital avatar will stand in front of a synthetic background, reciting synthetic text generated by Gemini, using a voice that sounds almost exactly like yours, but lacks any actual human cadence. It is a ghost in the machine, delivering a slide deck about Q3 margins.

This is not communication; it is a deepfake memo. If a manager cannot find five minutes to record a brief update, they should write a short, clear email instead. Sending a simulated version of oneself to deliver a status update is an admission of organizational dysfunction.

Furthermore, the technology relies heavily on the premise that Gemini Omni can effortlessly translate a dry text prompt into a cohesive visual sequence. Anyone who has interacted with current enterprise AI tools knows the reality is far messier. You will spend more time tweaking prompts and adjusting the hand gestures of your digital twin than you would have spent just hitting "record" on your webcam.

What we are left with is a tool that increases the friction of creation while decreasing the value of the output. It is a net negative for productivity, wrapped in the shiny packaging of modern synthetic media.

The Imminent Avalanche of Corporate Noise

The real danger of this technology is the sheer volume of low-effort garbage it will unlock upon internal corporate channels. When creating video becomes frictionless, the volume of video will scale exponentially. Our Slack channels and shared drives are already drowning in unread documents and ignored Loom recordings.

Imagine an inbox filled not with text updates you can scan in four seconds, but with three-minute AI-generated videos of your colleagues' avatars. You will be forced to watch a synthetic version of your VP of Product read a script that was likely written by another AI. We are building a corporate infrastructure where machines talk to machines, using human faces as a cosmetic layer.

"Users can create videos starring a digital version of themselves, alongside tools for generating and editing."

This creates a bizarre feedback loop. AI writes the script, AI generates the speaker, and eventually, the recipient will use another AI tool to summarize the video back into a bulleted list of text. We are spending billions of dollars in research and development to avoid talking to one another.

For startup founders and digital marketers, the lessons here are clear. In a world flooded with synthetic media, authenticity becomes the premium commodity. The brands and leaders who stand out will not be the ones with the most polished AI clones; they will be the ones who dare to show up as actual human beings, flaws and all.

Google's engineering is, as always, deeply impressive. They have solved the technical challenge of mapping a voice and face to a digital canvas. Yet, they have completely misread the room. If your message is so unimportant that you would rather have a synthetic puppet deliver it, perhaps it is a message that does not need to be sent at all.
